claustrophobia

hi, gerty,

no question this time, just a comment: climbing up that tiny tunnel to the crow's nest would excite every bit of my claustrophobia.  i hyperventilated just looking at the picture.

looking forward to your return home!  hope you will have a movie/photo festival.

End of expedition questions

How long are you going to continue posting journal entries?

Does this make you want to be a blogger (on a continuing basis)?

All the posts have been terrific!

Your husband,

Re the X-CTD

Hi, again, Gerty,

Is the X-CTD towed back on board by the computer "string" after it has finished data collection?

wow...

Hi, Gerty,

I particularly loved your 8/12 posting and pictures.  The landscape is so spectacularly desolate and beautiful, and I appreciated your description of the quiet. I know that while you are out on the ice you are busy working and it is very cold; however, have you had any opportunity just to pause for a while and take in this very different world?

walking on water!

Hi Gerty,

Can you give us a feeling for what it is like to walk on sea ice? My students and I are fascinated by the prospect of walking on ice especially when you can still see water. Do you know how thick the ice is when you are on it?
Thanks!

zooplankton

Hi Ms. Ward

My name is Johanna Ochoa from Los angeles valley college and i read your expedition and i just had a question regarding the zooplankton. Having found zooplankton under cold water conditions what kind of animals can be found in these areas and does it have any effect on temperature or salinity of the water.

Thank You

Johanna Ochoa

Northern Lights

Hey Gerty, Will you reach far enough north so there is effectively no night time darkness or is it already too late in the year? If it does get dark, have you seen the northern lights?

By the way, Jamie's excited to be in your advisory!

getting ready for our Florence departure on the 23rd,     jim salzman

p.s. If you only had 30 minutes of Olympics television time on the ship, which event would you watch?
